Are You (or Your Pet!) a Localvore? :)

With the recalls, scares and deaths from tainted treats and foods, many of our customers are becoming more aware of where their foods and treats are coming from for their beloved pets. While we have a wide range of edibles that are only U.S. sourced (or sourced from another country with even stricter regulations such as Canada), many of our customers are identifying themselves as ‘localvores’ and are searching for local companies that can help fill their pet care needs.

Here is a list of the Wisconsin-based companies whose products we carry, along with their websites you can click on for more information about their business, philosophy, and products:

  • www.americannaturalpremium.com  ANP, or American Natural Premium (or for many of our customers, “the big green bag”) is manufactured in the Fromm plant in Mequon.
  • www.frommfamily.com  Fromm has been in business since 1904. They are a family-owned and operated business based in Mequon.
  • www.herbsmithinc.com  Herbsmith from Hartland offers a generous line of supplements and treats…all stringently tested to ensure they are created from only the most high-quality herbs available.
  • www.frontporchpets.com  Sam’s Yams—made by Front Porch Pets in Genesee Depot—are popular with our sweet potato chew fans.
  • www.facebook.com/pages/Mrs-Beasters-Biskits/237834182936539  Mrs. Beaster’s Biskits—some quality treats from Columbus!
  • www.stellaandchewys.com  Stella and Chewy’s plant is in Milwaukee. Their lines of frozen and freeze dried diets were inspired by the founder’s dog Chewy and his friend Stella.
  • www.vitalessentialsraw.com  Vital Essentials out of Green Bay has a variety of products. Our biggest sellers are the freeze dried nibblet entrees and treats.

We’re also excited to carry some products from local craftspeople. Come check out our handmade dogs steps, scarves, and coming soon…mittens and slippers for the pet lover!

This Week’s Adoptable Pet

The lucky family that adopts this pet featured here on our blog will receive a coupon from HAWS good for a “congratulations” gift bag from End of the Leash!

To learn more about how to adopt through HAWS, please visit their adoption page.  You may also give them a call at 262.542.8851.

Kane from HAWS is featured here today:

Hi, I’m Kane!  And I really, really need a home that understands me. I was adopted and then brought back to the shelter because I am somewhat undisciplined and wasn’t given the time to show what a great dog I really am.

I am a 7 year old Lab mix and need a home without another dog…cats would be fine. I want an owner that will take the time to train me and realize that I am strong and ACTIVE. A biker or runner would be the best, because a tired dog is a good dog.

Some teenagers would be the best, but no toddlers, please, because I have been known to knock them over with my enthusiasm :)

So, please call HAWS at 262-542-8851 for more information on me. Train your Best Friend at HAWS that offers classes for puppies through adults. HAWS dogs get a special discount but all dogs are welcome. Call 262-542-8851 x114 or email training@hawspets.org.
