Top 4 Easter Hazards for Your Pet

The excitement of the Easter holiday may include a few items that can be quite hazardous to our animal companions!

Keep in mind especially these 4 things:

Easterpets.jpg
  1. Chocolate. The darker it is, the more poisonous it is to our pets.
  2. Plastic Easter grass.  Keep this out of pets' reach to avoid gastrointestinal distress.
  3. Plants. Lilies especially are extremely toxic to cats.
  4. Fertilizers/herbicides. Store locked away, and keep pets inside while applying.

These reminders are courtesy of the ASPCA (Top Four Easter Hazards for Pets).

Take advantage of March sales!

There are only a few days left in March, therefore just a few more days for all our awesome March specials!

Several brands of foods are on sale, plus tons of treats to fill the Easter baskets!  You you can find the details in our monthly newsletter.

Transitioning Cats to a Healthier Diet

Last week, Dr. Karen Becker posted an interview with "Two Crazy Cat Ladies" Jae Kennedy and Adrienne Lefebvre.  Here are the highlights--but we loved watching this immensely helpful and entertaining video!  (Alternatively, check out the complete written article/transcript here.)

Story at-a-glance

One of the things Jae and Adrienne focus on is helping parents of cats 10 years and older take important steps to help their kitties stay healthy and happy through middle age and their golden years

They share their experience, tips and tricks on introducing new foods to cats (no matter their age), and transitioning kitties to an entirely different, healthier diet

The ladies also explain why it’s so important to stop free feeding your cat

Adrienne and Jae discuss the most important supplements for cats, especially older ones, and how to use a bit of trickery to get them to accept add-ins at mealtime

Pets And Your Sleep

bedhogs.jpg

Whether you have one pet or several, nearly all of us could get a good laugh comparing our sleeping arrangements with them!  The warmth, security, and affection of our furry loved ones in our beds with us is usually a welcome and mutual feeling.

But occasionally (or frequently, for some) the bed-hogging, fur-flopping, and slurp-slurping wakes us up more than we'd prefer!  As we all know, poor sleep impacts our daily energy levels and possibly our long-term health.  So what's a loving pet owner to do?

We found a great article at animalwellnessmagazine.com that gives a few easy suggestions on how to remedy the issue!  Check it out ---> Is Your Dog Impacting Your Sleep?

And if giving your pet a bed of her own is on your list, we have TONS of great options at End of the Leash. We are happy to help you pick out the perfect one for your pet and your budget!

New Food at Our Mukwonago Store--Taiga

We are now offering Taiga dry dog food by Horizon at our Mukwonago store!  Read all about it in this excerpt from their website:

Taiga ('ti·gah') is the world's largest contiguous evergreen forest stretching across North America, Northern Europe and Siberia. It has been a sanctuary for wildlife and continues to be today. This ancestral backdrop is the inspiration for Taiga pet food. A true respect for simple, grain free, highly digestible, meat based diets.

As with all Horizon pet foods, the majority of ingredients are sourced locally from growers we know and trust. We start with animal protein in both a chicken (white meat) and pork (red meat) alternative.

We build our carbohydrates with a combination of legumes. Red lentils, peas, and garbanzo beans provide high dietary fiber yet low glycemic energy without the use of any processed grains.

The animal protein and carbohydrate foundation is rounded out with raw fruits and vegetables like apples, pineapple, blueberries, carrots, broccoli and bok choy.

We rebalance the ancestral attributes of meat, legumes, raw fruits and vegetables that are taken through a low temperature cooking process with vitamins and minerals, and a post cooking application of prebiotics, probiotics and natural enzymes to restore the best qualities of the raw ingredients impacted by modern cooking.

Lastly, Taiga comes in convenient 35 lb/15.9 kg bags only. This focus on large bags allows for us to produce the finished products most efficiently and therefore offer better value to you the consumer. That is the primary ambition of Taiga - the absolute best value in grain free with no sacrifice on quality. You simply can't do better in balancing quality and cost.

Be sure to stop by our Facebook page to see all of our weekly and monthly sales on foods and lots of other items!

February Is Pet Dental Health Month

In this article, Dr. Karen Becker, Integrative Wellness Veterinarian of healthypets.mercola.com, talks about why it's important for your pet to have a healthy mouth and teeth, and practical tips and advice to keep them that way!

dogsmile.jpg

Story at-a-glance (Pet Oral & Dental Health by Dr. Becker)

  • About 80 percent of dogs over the age of 3 have oral disease, typically gum disease
  • Plaque and tartar left on your dog’s teeth can lead to gum disease, and gum disease has been linked to heart disease in dogs
  • To help prevent oral disease in your dog, feed a species-appropriate diet and offer recreational bones or dental chews, and brush your dog’s teeth every day
  • It’s also important to take your dog for regular oral exams with your veterinarian
  • With appropriate home care, some dogs will never need a professional tooth cleaning, while other dogs require regular cleanings despite excellent home care
