This is Jack, the Russian Tortoise. He was surrendered to HAWS this summer, in rough shape. After several months recuperating in foster care, he's ready for adoption!

This gentle reptile is roughly the size of a soft ball. His species can grow to be eight to ten inches long and live until 40 years-old. He is a vegetarian who mostly dines on dark leafy greens (even dandelion leaves)! He likes a dry enclosure with special lights, somewhere to dig and appreciates a weekly soak. When the weather is warm he likes to be outdoors. However, as previously stated, he likes to dig. So, outside he needs to be watched or have a reinforced area.

See you at Midnight Magic!

A new spin on grain-free treats!

BettysElkAntlermix.jpeg

Betty from Walworth, Wisconsin got a fantastic idea to grind up the oh-so-popular Elk antlers into a powder form and incorporate it into an at-home dog cookie mix! She had the powder analyzed by Clemson University in South Carolina and found it was packed with protein and tons of minerals. She even sources the naturally-shed antlers from her brother’s family farm in southern Wisconsin.

End of the Leash is proud to carry Betty’s Grain-Free Amaranth Elk Antler Cookie Mix! It’s a great gift idea for the discerning pet palette. You can change up the flavor and nutrition by using different liquids in the recipe—bone broth or goat's milk are two healthy additions!  Stop in to learn more or pick up your own bag!

Need some cookie cutters for your holiday pet gifts?

We’ve got you covered! Get just the bone alone (1-3/8" x 3-1/8") or this set of 5. Great for making your own treats to give away, or as a gift themselves to your favorite pet-treat-baker!

Albert is a domestic short hair tabby with white. He is twelve years young and currently resides in our small cat colony room. That means that Albert can live in harmony with other mellow cats.

He likes meeting people and once he's done so is very affectionate. This former stray kitty enjoys sunning himself and surveying his kingdom from a comfy perch. He is looking to continue his life of leisure in a peaceful home.

A closer look at cats and kibble

Image from the article, Answers: What Dry Food Does to Your Cat's Gut from The Feline Nutrition Foundation.

Does this sound familiar? “I want to switch my cat over to a raw meat diet, but, in the meantime I'm still feeding her dry food. I notice she throws it up pretty often, almost always soon after eating it. What is it about dry food that makes cats throw it up? The barf looks almost the same as when it went in!”

We found an article on The Feline Nutrition Foundation to be of great help in understanding some of the science of what happens in a cat’s digestive tract when it consumes dry kibble.

A little more about the AMCW:
The Alaskan Malamute Club of Wisconsin, Inc. was started in 1969 by a group of people interested in the promotion of the true image of the Alaskan Malamute. It is felt that the breed can be promoted and advanced through sharing of knowledge between club members. The AMCW holds many events throughout the year including weight pulls, dog shows, backpacking, sledding, and public education events. You need not own an Alaskan Malamute to participate in the club events!

In two days, Shorty Rossi of Animal Planet’s Pit Boss WILL BE AT END OF THE LEASH MUKWONAGO!

We can’t wait to see you there! Come and hear Shorty speak about his passions: breed awareness, fighting BSL (Breed Specific Legislation), fighting for animal rights, spay and neuter clinics, promoting his book Four Feet Tall and Rising, motivational and keynote speaking, and promoting his cigar line.

Introducing the Pawplexer!

The Pawplexer was created to offer an extra challenge to those dogs who love to chew, but may chew through a Benebone quickly. The Pawplexer is like having 2 toys in 1!

The chew itself is made much like a Benebone: crafted in the USA with American-sourced nylon and flavored with 100% real food ingredients.

The Pawplexer was designed so it can hold its own as a standalone chew. However, even more fun and creativity comes from what you put in the Pawplexer.

End of the Leash carries the small size (for dogs under 30lb) in all 3 flavors: bacon, peanut, and chicken.

New treats from Wag

Check out the awesome new goods from Wag! We think your dog will love them. Stop in one of our stores and our friendly staff can tell you all about them!

End of the Leash now has:

  • Goat Horns

  • Beef Tripe

  • Kangaroo cubes (as well as kangaroo liver, jerky, and filets—not pictured)

  • Venison Jerky

  • Green Lipped Mussels

Bring Love In with WO and #buyoneGIVEtwo

End of the Leash is excited to announce a special new addition to our toy offerings—WO!

Every time you buy a WO dog toy, 2 nutritional meals are given to orphaned children and widows. #buyonegivetwo

What is WO? It stands for “widows” and “orphans”. Each WO product you purchase directly funds meals for widows and orphans globally. WO is partnered with an organization in Ethiopia called Bring Love In (BLI) to help feed orphans and widows in their organization, thereby creating a tangible change—daily, globally. These meals in Ethiopia often represent the highest amount of nutrition that these folks get in any given day.

WO’s dog toys are interactive and safe. They are engineered to flex your dog's muscles and mind. We carry WO’s Bones (small and large) and Disc.

WO Pet material is BPA-free, phthalate-free, non-toxic and FDA compliant—important when toys come in such close contact with your pet.

Looking for unique chews?

We now have Lamb Tails and Wild Goat Ears by Barking Buddha!

Lamb Tails are great for small to medium dogs. They are free range, grass fed, and have a pleasant scent. Not smoked and no smoke flavor added.

Wild Goat Ears are super thick and great for larger dogs! They are additive, chemical, and preservative free. They are 100% digestible and a great alternative to raw hide chews.

Barking Buddha Pet Products are made in an FDA approved facility and sourced from South America.

Calming Options for Your Pet

Summer thunderstorms keeping you and your pet up? Or does your pet have an aversion to loud noises in general? Especially with the upcoming Labor Day weekend, we may yet still hear more fireworks!

We have many calming and anxiety-reducing product options at End of the Leash. We'd love to help you out!  Stop in and chat with our staff and we will help you choose which one, or combination of ones, work for you and your pet!  Here are videos on two great choices we offer: July Third by Herbsmith and Pet Releaf CBD and Hemp Infused Pet Products.

We also love this article by The Humane Society of the United States It gets into the nitty gritty of helping you understand why your pet is afraid of certain noises, which is very important in properly assisting them during the stressful scenarios. Many times destructive behaviors are done out of fear, and doing certain things--like punishing or crating--can possibly make the problem worse. Please check out this excellent article, AND learn how you can help your pet overcome his fears! Giving Corn Cobs to Your Dogs--Just Don't Do It!

Ah, ears of sweet corn. Those juicy, crunchy, buttery, salty treats of summer! And of course, who doesn't want to share the bliss with their favorite pooch?

Well, go ahead and indulge Fido with some nibbles of kernels if you choose, but toss the cob! Be sure to secure the spent cobs FAR and away, in a bag, in the trash bin, in the garage, secure from any sneaky doggie snoops.

If you suspect your dog has gotten into the trash and eaten cobs (or any other food/foreign object), call your veterinarian immediately. Some symptoms you may notice are:

  • vomiting or dry heaves
  • diarrhea (or straining)
  • not eating
  • painful abdomen
  • lethargy

A dog's body cannot break down the cobs and there's a good chance they will get lodged in the intestines causing a possibly fatal obstruction.  Thankfully, Dozer was a lucky boy and recovered.  Avoid a possible trip to the emergency vet, or even worse--just say no to giving your dog (or cat!) corn on the cob!

Second--fuel up with raw

Introducing Small Batch, again!  Our stores will both be receiving in the Small Batch frozen foods this week for both cats and dogs. We already have the freeze dried food as well as treats.

Come see us to learn more, or get some details from one of our previous blog posts: Introducing...Small Batch!

Here's what the Small Batch folks have to say about their frozen raw formulas:

We take great pride in our sourcing, using wonderful local farms and ranches. Just ask us and we’ll tell you who they are!

Additionally, we strive to only use meats that are free-range, pasture raised and always free of hormones and antibiotics. Our produce is 100% certified Organic and our supplements are always pure, organic, and unrefined. No HPP (high pressure pasteurization) always 100% raw, the way nature intended.

Dr. Becker's first aid kit list

We love Dr. Karen Becker of Mercola's Healthy Pets!  Once again, she comes through with an excellent and indispensable article on creating a first aid kit for our animal companions. It's easy, and once you've put it all together it will be at the ready for nearly any emergency you may encounter.

We've made it even easier for you by slightly condensing the article into a 2-page article/list of everything for your first aid kit!

New Unique Treats by Scout & Zoe's

One of Scout & Zoe's treat lines is part of a project called Scout & Zoe's Fish on a Mission(R).  Their Carp Planks and Carp Spears (for cats, too!) treats are included in this project. They also have other carp treats including Carp Bubblers, Carp Eye Candy, and Carp Puffers. As shared by PetPr:

Each treat is high in nutritional value due to an abundant concentration of Omega-3 fatty acids, which are associated with prevention of kidney protection, overall well-being, and diseases caused by aging.

Carp are free from pollutants such as PCPs, Mercury, and other metals due to their filter-feeding mechanisms.

“Unlike what may happen at other pet treat companies, I actually eat the pet treats myself,” noted Cindy Dunston Quirk, Founder of Scout & Zoe’s Premium Pet Products.

A friend of the environment, Dunston Quirk selected carp in part due to the impact it has on rivers and lakes; carp are known to be prolific and to clog the waterways. The company helps American waterways by using the services of local fishermen to gather the invasive carp, which are then turned into treats by a family owned contract manufacturer and then packaged by adults who are intellectually disabled and are learning job skills to help them live life on their own terms.

End of the Leash carries all of the above carp treats as well as several of Scout & Zoe's other treats, including Banana Carrot crunchy cookies, and many dehydrated offerings such as Chicken & Apple Bites, Chicken Jerky Sticks, Duck Delights, Ox Tails, Green Tripe Sticks, Honey Baked Ham, Veggie Hearts, Salmon Coconut and Venison Jerky.
