HAWS PET OF THE WEEK

To learn more about how to adopt through HAWS, please visit their adoption page.  You may also give them a call at 262.542.8851.

This week's HAWS' Pet of the Week is Popple! This beautiful blonde German Shepherd mix came to HAWS from Texas and is about two years old. She is eager to learn and already knows some cues, such as "sit". Popple is goofy and affectionate, even putting her ears back and grinning. This sweet girl must be in a home with children 6 and older because she can be reluctant giving up her bone. She must be the only animal in the household.

Cold Weather Closing

coldweather.jpg

If you didn’t see our announcement on Facebook, both our Mukwonago and Pewaukee End of the Leash locations closed for today, Wednesday, January 30th, because of the extreme cold and weather. We hope you are all safe and warm, too! Both stores will reopen Thursday January 31st at 11am (two hours later than our usual time).

As responsible pet owners, we all know how important it is to keep our animal friends safe during summer and hot weather; let’s not forget our cold weather safety, too! The American Veterinary Medical Association has compiled a detailed list of tips, things to observe, and choices for you and your pet during cold weather.

Jeremy is a domestic mouse who is available for adoption at HAWS. He and several of his brothers have been waiting patiently for homes. Mice are fun pets who will entertain you with their antics. They are sweet, intelligent little animals who have individual personalities. Males should be kept by themselves to avoid fighting, but they don't take up much space. If you have room for a little rodent friend come and visit Jeremy and his brothers!

Beat the January Blues

The rush of the holidays is over, and the cold and (still) long winter days are here. Since lengthy excursions outdoors aren’t on the schedule quite yet for most of us here in Wisconsin, End of the Leash offers some fun ways to help your animal friends (and you!) through the January doldrums.

Our pick for the month—thinking games!

First, check out this cool article we found on Mother Nature Network (MNN)— 10 Brain Games to Play with Your Pup. (And probably some even with your kitty!) It includes great descriptions, and even a few videos! We’re pretty impressed with this one:

We also have some excellent doggie “board games” at End of the Leash! These games are designed by Nina Ottosson and focus on challenging your dog’s brain. Be sure to supervise when playing, and remember they aren’t chew toys so be sure to clean and put away when the fun’s done! We guarantee you’ll enjoy teaching your dog how to use the puzzle—play, bond, and make winter days more exciting.

Nina’s toys are all easy to clean. Simply remove all treats/kibble and hand wash with warm soapy water, rinse clean and dry. Fill again for more fun! Stop in at either of our locations to check them out!

Homemade Pet Treats--A Fun & Easy Gift!

We’ve got you covered at EOTL for Christmas gifts for your pets AND pet-loving friends!

We are really loving Betty’s Grain-Free Amaranth Elk Antler Cookie Mix for nutrition-packed grain-free dog treats. It’s a great gift idea for the discerning pet palette. You can change up the flavor and nutrition by using different liquids in the recipe—bone broth or goat's milk are two healthy additions! Best of all, you can make the treats yourself or simply give the mix as a gift!

Betty’s says:
This cookie mix is fast, fresh and fun!  Contains Iron, Zinc, Calcium, Copper, Manganese, Magnesium, Potassium and Phosphorus.  Guaranteed analysis from Clemson University.  Naturally occurring Glucosamine and Chondroitin is also found in Ground Elk Antler!  Ingredients [for the grain-free mix] include Garbanzo beans, Arrowroot, 5 Seed meal Mix (Sunflower, Hemp & Pumpkin Kernels, Flax and Chia Seeds), Sorghum, Amaranth, Ground Elk Antler, Cinnamon and Turmeric.

Whether you’re making the treats or gifting the mix, EOTL also has cookie cutters to make fun shapes!

For an easy, go-to cookie-shaping tool, look no further than the Messy Muts Silicone Dog Treat Maker! It has non-slip handles, is BPA and PVC-free, safe up to 446 degrees, and is microwave, dishwasher, and freezer safe! It includes 15 small and 8 large bone-shaped cavities.

If you prefer classic cookie cutters with a variety of shapes, we have Ann Clark’s set of 5 cookie cutters. It makes a cute gift on its own as well!

More high-quality gifts you can find at End of the Leash!

New goodness from Herbsmith

We now carry two new digestive health support products from our friends at Herbsmith—both of which are safe for both your dog and cat!

Herbsmith GastroCare focuses on pets who have sensitive tummies, and occasional symptoms like loose stools, gurgly belly, and who may need overall digestive support.

Herbsmith Slippery Elm is a wonderful anti-inflammatory and intestinal soother for pets who may have diarrhea or constipation, stomach irritation and/or gastric distress. It can help a pet recover more quickly after eating something she shouldn’t have. This formula is also USDA organic.

Stop in at one of our locations to chat with our helpful staff if you think your dog or cat might benefit from one of these products! We can help you choose which one is best for your pet.

She was emaciated and listless, but her will to live was strong! After being tenderly cared for by shelter staff and her foster family, Cleo is now looking for a forever home. This is Jack, the Russian Tortoise. He was surrendered to HAWS this summer, in rough shape. After several months recuperating in foster care, he's ready for adoption!

This gentle reptile is roughly the size of a soft ball. His species can grow to be eight to ten inches long and live until 40 years-old. He is a vegetarian who mostly dines on dark leafy greens (even dandelion leaves)! He likes a dry enclosure with special lights, somewhere to dig and appreciates a weekly soak. When the weather is warm he likes to be outdoors. However, as previously stated, he likes to dig. So, outside he needs to be watched or have a reinforced area.

See you at Midnight Magic!

A new spin on grain-free treats!

BettysElkAntlermix.jpeg

Betty from Walworth, Wisconsin got a fantastic idea to grind up the oh-so-popular Elk antlers into a powder form and incorporate it into an at-home dog cookie mix! She had the powder analyzed by Clemson University in South Carolina and found it was packed with protein and tons of minerals. She even sources the naturally-shed antlers from her brother’s family farm in southern Wisconsin.

End of the Leash is proud to carry Betty’s Grain-Free Amaranth Elk Antler Cookie Mix! It’s a great gift idea for the discerning pet palette. You can change up the flavor and nutrition by using different liquids in the recipe—bone broth or goat's milk are two healthy additions!  Stop in to learn more or pick up your own bag!

Need some cookie cutters for your holiday pet gifts?

We’ve got you covered! Get just the bone alone (1-3/8" x 3-1/8") or this set of 5. Great for making your own treats to give away, or as a gift themselves to your favorite pet-treat-baker!

Albert is a domestic short hair tabby with white. He is twelve years young and currently resides in our small cat colony room. That means that Albert can live in harmony with other mellow cats.

He likes meeting people and once he's done so is very affectionate. This former stray kitty enjoys sunning himself and surveying his kingdom from a comfy perch. He is looking to continue his life of leisure in a peaceful home.

A closer look at cats and kibble

Does this sound familiar? “I want to switch my cat over to a raw meat diet, but, in the meantime I'm still feeding her dry food. I notice she throws it up pretty often, almost always soon after eating it. What is it about dry food that makes cats throw it up? The barf looks almost the same as when it went in!”

We found an article on The Feline Nutrition Foundation to be of great help in understanding some of the science of what happens in a cat’s digestive tract when it consumes dry kibble.

Chico is a 2 year old Shih Tzu and Chihuahua mix. His confidence is not high so a family that can take time and be calm while he comes out of his shell would be ideal. This little dog has a big personality.

A little more about the AMCW:
The Alaskan Malamute Club of Wisconsin, Inc. was started in 1969 by a group of people interested in the promotion of the true image of the Alaskan Malamute. It is felt that the breed can be promoted and advanced through sharing of knowledge between club members. The AMCW holds many events throughout the year including weight pulls, dog shows, backpacking, sledding, and public education events. You need not own an Alaskan Malamute to participate in the club events!

Don't Miss Shorty!

shortysfreedomtour-small.png

In two days, Shorty Rossi of Animal Planet’s Pit Boss WILL BE AT END OF THE LEASH MUKWONAGO!

We can’t wait to see you there! Come and hear Shorty speak about his passions: breed awareness, fighting BSL (Breed Specific Legislation), fighting for animal rights, spay and neuter clinics, promoting his book Four Feet Tall and Rising, motivational and keynote speaking, and promoting his cigar line.

Join us at our Mukwonago store THIS FRIDAY, October 12th from 4-6pm. We’ll have prizes, raffles, give-a-ways, and most importantly—Shorty!

Introducing the Pawplexer!

The Pawplexer was created to offer an extra challenge to those dogs who love to chew, but may chew through a Benebone quickly. The Pawplexer is like having 2 toys in 1!

The chew itself is made much like a Benebone: crafted in the USA with American-sourced nylon and flavored with 100% real food ingredients.

The Pawplexer was designed so it can hold its own as a standalone chew. However, even more fun and creativity comes from what you put in the Pawplexer.

End of the Leash carries the small size (for dogs under 30lb) in all 3 flavors: bacon, peanut, and chicken.

New treats from Wag

Check out the awesome new goods from Wag! We think your dog will love them. Stop in one of our stores and our friendly staff can tell you all about them!

End of the Leash now has:

  • Goat Horns

  • Beef Tripe

  • Kangaroo cubes (as well as kangaroo liver, jerky, and filets—not pictured)

  • Venison Jerky

  • Green Lipped Mussels
