We are excited to announce our latest food addition--Small Batch!  We have freeze dried entrees and treats in stock now.  Frozen raw will be coming soon!

We only use fresh whole vegetables and herbs that are certified organic, non-GMO and free of pesticides. Introducing Rancherosa for Dogs by Fromm

Amanita--Death Caps--are they in your yard??

Excerpt from an article by Dr. Karen Becker:

Not too long ago, I happened upon a heartbreaking headline from an online news source. It read, "A warning to pet owners: Two dogs found dead after eating poisonous mushrooms from owner's yard."

Below the headline were pictures of the dogs, a gorgeous 3-year-old Saint Bernard named Drago, and Adoni, a handsome 8-year-old Lab mix. When the dogs' owner returned to her home in Wake County, North Carolina on a Sunday in March, she found them dead. Four other dogs in the home were stumbling around and vomiting.

A veterinarian found traces of Amatoxin, a poisonous substance found in certain mushrooms, in the dogs' blood. Apparently they had ingested Amanita mushrooms, also called Death Caps or Death Angels, which are the most lethal mushrooms in North America. When ingested, they cause liver failure. Currently, no antidote exists.

The dogs' owner didn't realize the mushrooms were growing in her yard, under mulch, and hopes telling her tragic story will help educate other pet parents.

Please read over the entire article to determine if any of these wild mushrooms are taking up residence in your yard.  They all pose a serious risk (even death) to your pet's health if ingested. The Amanita Phalloides and Inocybe seem to be the most attractive to dogs because of their fishy odor.

Safety First in Hot Weather

Mother Nature seems to have sidetracked Spring this year in the Midwest--it started quite late, and now we are already having hot Summer temps!  So this means putting our safety caps on and being careful not to overdo long walks and outdoor play, and being strategic when we do go out.

We've created a consolidated list for basic Summer safety tips, and provided a few links for even more details.

Enjoy the outdoors and stay safe, too!

Practice basic Summer safety:

1. Never leave your pets in a parked car
2. Watch the humidity
3. Limit exercise on hot days
4. How hot is the road? HOT ASPHALT AWARENESS!
5. Don't rely on a fan
6. Provide ample shade and water
7. Cool your pet inside and out (with frozen treats)
8. Watch for signs of heat stroke
9. Be properly prepared for power outages (so everyone stays cool!)

Kenna is a 2 year Labrador mix. She came to us from Oklahoma. Kenna is a very social girl. She has been looking longingly for her "furever" home. She was a great mom to her puppies which are now re-homed, and it is her turn to find a great home. Rihanna says you need an umbrella--HAWS says you need to come adopt Kenna, enna, enna! :)

What To Do When a Pet Goes Missing

Spring fever has sprung...has your pet gone missing? 

The Humane Society of the United States has some excellent tips on what to do FIRST (read here for the full article, "What to Do If You Lose Your Pet"):

1. Contact local animal shelters and animal control agencies
2. Search the neighborhood
3. Advertise
4. Try the internet
5. Be wary of pet-recovery scams
6. Don't give up your search!!

In addition, if you live in Wisconsin, be sure to utilize Lost Dogs of Wisconsin at https://www.facebook.com/findfido/.  Social media can be a critical asset to spreading the word quickly for people to keep a look out for the animals that are lost.  Be sure to check out their pinned Facebook post--they have info on what to do if you have lost your pet, OR if you have found a lost pet!  They also provide a link to an online form you can fill out to get your lost or found pet in the free search directory.

On the morning of Saturday, May 5th, something amazing will happen in our community and you and your dog(s) can be a part of it. So grab your dog and leash, and join the thousands who care to support local cancer patients on a two-mile route.

REGISTRATION: 8 a.m. Walks begins at 10 a.m.

Walkers are also welcome at Frame Park in Waukesha, WI for RiverWalk for Cancer, but per city ordinance, four-legged friends must remain at home.

All dogs at ParkWalk in Mukwonago receive a free bandana, donated by End of the Leash. Dogs at LakeWalk in Oconomowoc also receive free bandanas.

Couleann is an 8 year old Chihuahua Mix. HAWS is recommending children of any age as he has tolerated everything. Couleann is food motivated and is working on losing some weight; this will involve limiting treats. He has done okay with other dogs at the shelter as well. If you want a small dog with a big personality, then he is the dog for you!

Jack is a Catahoula Leopard Dog Mix. He is 1 year old and energetic!  If you are looking for an interactive alarm system that you feed, you should stop in to meet Jack today. His previous owner mentioned he is house trained, and once he trusts you he will be a faithful companion.

Morty is a 2 year old Pit Bull Terrier. HAWS is recommending households with children 10 and older. He would do best being the only pet and hogging all the attention in the home. He is very athletic and will lean into petting.

Benji is a 1 year old Terrier. He can be very mouthy so he is restricted to houses with teens and older. He did not enjoy cats and dogs being present. He did great with people and loves to play with soft toys. He will need a house that can provide a lot of physical and mental challenges.

Dorothy is a 2 year old Labrador Mix. She is timid initially but when she warms up you see her personality. She will lean for petting when you've earned her trust. 

Ellie is an 8 year old Boxer mix. She can be shy with children. She may do best as the only pet so she can hog all your attention. She loves to be with people and to be petted.

Mimi is an 8 year old cat. She was displaced to the shelter due to her owner's medical needs. Some may even call her purrfect!

Chloe is a 6 month old Pitbull Terrier. She can be very shy at first, but once you earn her trust she is a huge love bug. We are working on getting some basic manners learned, but she is a very bright and energetic girl.

Suki is a 2 year old American Pitbull Terrier. HAWS is recommending children 10 and older due to her energy and exuberance. She would do best hogging all the love in the household and not having to share with other pets. Suki is awaiting her furever home, stop in to meet her and see everything your house is missing.

Gin is a 3 year old Coonhound. HAWS is recommending children 6 and older due to her intensity with food. She would not do well with a cat, but has gotten along with dogs here. If you want a dog that will serenade you with baying Gin is the dog for you!

Top 4 Easter Hazards for Your Pet

The excitement of the Easter holiday may include a few items that can be quite hazardous to our animal companions!

Keep in mind especially these 4 things:

1. Chocolate. The darker it is, the more poisonous it is to our pets.
2. Plastic Easter grass.  Keep this out of pets' reach to avoid gastrointestinal distress.
3. Plants. Lilies especially are extremely toxic to cats. 
4. Fertilizers/herbicides. Store locked away, and keep pets inside while applying.

Lily and Nova are adult female Guinea Pigs. They enjoy each other’s company and when they get used to your scent they will enjoy you as well. When they are happy, they let you know with a squeal or whistle!

Hollister is a 2 year old Labrador and Pitbull Terrier mix. HAWS is recommending older children because he is timid initially. He will do best being the only pet. If you are looking for a dog to walk and hike on leash with you, he may be the one

Reuban is a recent addition to HAWS from Alabama. He is timid and needs time to get to know you. While he is not a fan of being touched, he loves to be around people.

Kenny is a very affectionate and sweet cat who has been at HAWS since January. He does not do well with other animals but would love to be the only pet for you!

Speedo is a 7 years old cat. He is overweight and due to this, he is on a strict canned grain free diet. He has been fine with cats and dogs. Speedo has tolerated young kids but does not appreciate hugs. His size does not stop him from being playful!

Otis is a 5 years old English Bulldog Mix. We are recommending households with teens and older because he can be protective of toys. He is very strong and very energetic! We highly recommend households familiar with maintenance of the breed.

Milo is an 8 year old Yorkshire Terrier. He would do best in a home with older children as he can be scared of quick movement, loud noises, and even new places. Once he warms up to new people, he is a cuddly boy.

Mr. Bigg is a 6 year old Chihuahua. He can be scared of new people initially but once he has bonded his personality shines. He does well with other animals unless they rush his space. Patience definitely has BIG rewards with this boy.

Smokey is a 5 year old Hound mix. Has a very loud bark when he is excited. His nose was made for sniffing and that's just what it will do, one of these days he'll sniff all over you. ;)  When outside make sure he is on leash or he might just sniff until he is out of sight!

Martin is a 2 year old Plott Hound mix. We are recommending children 6 and older because when you pet him he gives love nibbles. He enjoys being around people and being outside using his hound senses.

Theodore is a 1 year old Red Eared Slide. He needs a family that will provide interaction slowly so he can get used to handling again. Other than that, he is quite active and quick on his feet.

Guapo is an 8 year old Chihuahua. His name fits him well as it means "handsome" in Spanish. His good looks are accompanied with character and personality. He does have to go to a home with teens and older because he enjoys petting on his terms.

Looking for that one true love! Meet Buddy the 4-year-old American Bulldog. He will need to be the only pet in the house. He's a big boy and once he becomes familiar with you, he will make a great best friend.

Albert Einstein is a 2-year-old Lionhead. He is not a huge fan about being lifted, but will cuddle if you sit on the floor. His wild hair will need brushing. Come meet this bunny "relativity" soon!
