Bring your doggies, kiddos, and your appetites, too.  Winston's Wishes rescue will be grilling up lunch for everyone!  All proceeds will benefit Winston's Wishes to build a new shelter in Mukwonago! So come hungry :)

Myrna is a 6 month old Pointer and Terrier mix puppy. She really enjoys the company of people--including children. Myrna would do best being the only pet in the home as she is a little shy.

Jersey is a 9 year old Cattle Dog mix. She is a fairly independent. Jersey does not like to share items that belong to her--especially food. She enjoys human company on long walks.

Dexter is a Labrador mix puppy! He can be a timid boy, but wants to be outgoing. He seeks attention when he is comfortable, but when he is not he will retreat.  Dexter is not a big fan of restraint including from a leash, but HAWS is working on that.  

Rocco is a young Pit Bull Terrier mix. He would do better in a house with older children due to his level of energy, and he may do best in an only pet household. Rocco is very friendly--he just might put his front paws on your lap and lean into you!

Holiday Hours

Just a reminder that both of our locations will be CLOSED on Tuesday, July 4th for Independence Day.  We will reopen on Wednesday, July 5th and resume our regular hours at 9am.

Gretel is a 6-month-old puppy that is full of energy and spunk! She does well with people and other dogs. She is already learning to fetch with soft toys.

Rose is currently our longest resident at HAWS. She has patiently been waiting for her forever home since February. Rose would do best being the only pet in the home, but with as loving as she is you will not need another pet!

Does Your Pet Have Dry, Itchy Skin?

At one time or another, our sweet animal friends may experience a bout of dry, flaky skin--or worse, have chronically itchy skin.  Dr. Karen Becker of healthypets.mercola.com wrote an informative article listing some of the main reasons this might be happening to your pet and some tips on how to resolve the issue.

The four most like reasons for dry skin in your pet are:

1. Lack of grooming
2. Too few or too many baths
3. A nutritional deficiency
4. An underlying medical condition

One of the beautiful things about coconut oil is its versatility.

From humans to households, there’s always a use for coconut oil!

In what other ways can we use this healthy fat? How about our furry friends? Yes!

Dogs subsist largely on a carnivorous diet, yet many also love fruits, vegetables, and other delectable treats.  Especially labradors. Anyone who has ever known a labrador knows they have hearts of gold and stomachs of steel.  So when we tested coconut oil on our beloved lab, it was easy to see he had found a new favorite treat.

Generally speaking though, I’ve yet to meet a dog that doesn’t love to lick hands clean after a slathering of coconut oil!

What Are The Benefits Of Coconut Oil For Dogs?

As far as your beloved pooch goes, coconut oil may help maintain clean teeth, shiny fur, and overall good health. It’s not a magic bullet, but it certainly can add to their overall well-being.

Coconut oil is safe to use both orally and topically and is an easy way to help build your dog’s immune system.

#1 — Lauric Acid

Coconut oil is the richest whole food source of lauric acid — a medium-chain triglyceride known for its therapeutic benefits.

Many of coconut oil’s health benefits can be attributed to its high content of lauric acid, which is known for possessing antibacterial, antiviral, and antimicrobial qualities.

#2 — Cleaner Teeth

Coconut oil has amazing antibacterial qualities which make it a great addition to your dog’s teeth cleaning regime.

After all, no one likes smelly dog breath!

If you’re not feeding your dog raw bones or specially made dog chews to help keep their teeth clean, it’s not uncommon for harmful bacteria to build up around their teeth and gums which contributes to smelly breath and oral health problems.

This is where coconut oil can help significantly. Take an old toothbrush and simply brush their teeth with a little bit of coconut oil. Be sure to keep your dog’s toothbrush separate from the people toothbrushes!

#3 — Improved Heart Health

Supplementing your dog’s diet with a teaspoon of coconut oil can help maintain healthy cholesterol levels.

The saturated fat found in coconut oil has been said to help lower the risk of heart disease and raise overall heart health (source).

Simply add coconut oil to your dog’s food! Most dogs, however, will happily lick coconut oil straight off the spoon!

Start your fur baby off with just a lick and slowly increase the dosage to one teaspoon after 3 or 4 weeks. As with most things, too much too soon can upset your dog’s digestive system, and this slow increase gives their body time to adjust.

#4 — A Shiny Coat

During your dog’s next bath, mix 1 teaspoon of coconut oil in to the dog shampoo.

The coconut oil will leave your dog’s coat smooth and shiny. Who doesn’t love to bury themselves in a warm embrace when your dog has a nice clean coat? The added scent of coconut oil is a bonus!

#5 — Moisturizing Dry Skin

Coconut oil has become a popular skin and hair moisturizing treatment for humans, and your pooch can benefit just the same.

It’s simple, cost-effective, and does the job. If your dog is experiencing patches of dry skin, rub some coconut oil into the affected area. Do be careful not to use it in an area where they can easily lick it off — otherwise it may result in further irritation of the area.

Floyd is an almost 2-year-old energetic hound mix. He has been searching for his new home since February. If there is someone out there looking for an energetic dog that would love hiking, running, or playing most of the day meeting Floyd is highly recommended. He is also great with other dogs! Stop in or call in to meet him.

Zoey the 8-month-old Pit Bull Terrier is a bundle of fun and looking for her forever home. She does well with other dogs. She has a very wiggly and excited play manner and can barely contain herself. Zoey also learns things quickly so stop in and check out her “sit”.

Henry is a young Dutch bunny that was brought in when the other rabbit in the house was not getting along with him. He is an active young guy that would love to happily hop around his adoptive home!

Samantha the 11-month-old Pit Bull Terrier was displaced when her human owners stopped getting along. She is quite playful and engages with people nicely! Samantha would do best in a home where she is the only pet as she doesn't get along with many dogs.

Lady is a 2-year-old Redbone Coonhound that came to HAWS from Alabama. She is an active girl that will need a lot of physical and mental exercise with a family of teens and older. Lady is very playful with other dogs. HAWS is working on her walking with a loose leash. Come meet this social butterfly!

Sabrina is a 1-year-old Plott Hound Mix from Alabama. She can be sensitive to some handling so we are recommending older children. Sabrina may do well with cats and dogs; but she is very forward and interested in both, so confident pets may enjoy her company more. She looks forward to playing with squeaky toys in her new home!

Memorial Weekend Hours

This weekend, both our Mukwonago and Pewaukee locations will be OPEN Saturday and Sunday 9am-4pm, and CLOSED on Monday, May 29th in observance of the Memorial Day holiday.

We will resume normal business hours on Tuesday, May 30th at 9am for both locations.

Rett and Scarlet are a pair of loving parakeets in search of a new home together! Their home was displaced when their owner passed away. They love to sit side by side on their perches and chit and chat all day!

Charlie is a super playful 8 year old. He does need an experienced adult ONLY home because he is sensitive to touch. He did well with a cat at HAWS. He could play with toys all day!

This is Buddy! He is an active 3 year old. When he initially meets people he can be shy, but he does warm up quickly. Buddy plays well with dogs in the shelter, but in the home he can get too intense. If smelling was an Olympic sport he could win the gold!

This is Lukey! Her hopping personality will keep her owners busy. Lukey loves to be on the floor and jump into laps, but she is not a big fan of being held/carried. HAWS does not know her age because she was surrendered with limited information.

Laverne and Shirley are a mom and daughter pair of little Degus! They are very active and high energy.  They can be handled but they are not very comfortable with it, they prefer to have their freedom. Both of the girls have also been spayed. 

Beau is a sweet older Beagle. He is 10 years old but loves to play and go for walks. His beagle nose can get him in trouble sometimes and he has a little weight problem because of it.  Beaus new family will need to help him get his summer body!

Party Animal Customers--PLEASE READ

Due to their recent recall on two varieties in their line, in an abundance of caution, we have pulled all Party Animal products from our shelves.

On April 17, 2017, Party Animal recalled a precautionary recall after they were informed that two of their flavors tested positive with the presence of phenobarbital. They are still undergoing testing, however this is the second recall of a food manufactured in the Evanger’s cannery and we prefer to err on the side of caution. We do not have any of the affected lot numbers in stock, but are still choosing to remove the line from our stores.

At this time, we are not going to carry any foods manufactured at the Evanger’s plant. If we don’t feel confident about feeding it to our pets, we won’t sell it to yours.

Please see a staff member if you need help finding an alternative.

Lucka is an 8-year-old Dachshund/Beagle mix. He is a fun-loving guy that loves to go for walks and play with squeaky toys. Lucka seems to get along well with cats and other dogs. If you are looking for an older man in your life that is ready to enjoy the simple things life has to offer, he is your guy!

Little Bit is a 5-year-old Lab mix from Alabama. She came here while pregnant and she since has had puppies and they have been adopted--now it's her turn! At first she can be very shy so she will need a home that will be willing to take their time with her. Once she warms up to you she is quite a character--she will show you her love of toys.

Lilac recently arrived in Wisconsin, she traveled all the way from Texas in hopes of finding a forever home. She is a very lovely bunny girl and is on the quiet and shy side. We are not sure of her exact age, but she is an adult. Based on her personality seen here we believe that she would do well in a quiet home. After she gets to know you better she will be the best furry friend you will ever have.

Posten is a handsome 12 year old kitty! He came to HAWS after his owner passed away. He has a very sweet disposition and is looking for his retirement home. Once he warms up to you he would love to sit on your lap and get some snuggle time.

Floyd is a fun loving boy! He is almost 2 years old and is a hound mix. This tall, lanky boy is in need of a very active family that will give him plenty of exercise! He does walk well with a harness on and enjoys the company of other dogs. However, he is not good with cats or small animals. He is very smart and willing to learn new things but because of his high energy he is not recommended for homes with small children.  He would be a great couch potato once his energy is wore out.

Sassy is a 12 year old Miki who arrived at HAWS after her owner passed away. She is a sweet little old lady looking for her retirement home! Sassy looks forward to spending time lying next to you or on your lap and receiving nice pets. She may even roll over for a belly rub. Based on her behavior at here, she seems to be good with cats and is good with other dogs.  If you are looking for a low-key dog, she is your gal!

Hunter is a 4-year-old lab mix! He is in need of a diet so he can get his body back into swimsuit shape for the summer.  His new family will have to make sure they don’t leave good stuff on the counter--he will help himself to anything he can find.  Since he is such a large boy, a home with small children would not be the best fit. He does get along with other dogs and cats as well.

Clay is a 5-year-old pit mix who is as sweet as can be! He has been with HAWS since November--our longest-term dog resident.  The shelter was a very scary place for him so luckily there was a wonderful family who has been fostering since shortly after he came to us.  He is a great boy that is good with cats and other dogs.  If you are interested in meeting him, call the shelter and we will set up a meet and greet.

Ms. Wisconsin is a beautiful New Zealand rabbit that made the journey to HAWS from Alabama in hopes of finding her forever home. She is a sweet southern girl. She is pure with pretty ruby eyes! She is very friendly and enjoys attention. She is a social butterfly and loves hanging with all humans and enjoy loving pets!  She even seems to enjoy the attention of children and would do well with them (supervised interactions, of course). She will make a wonderful life-long companion that will bring much happiness into your home.

Eva is a 9-month-old pit bull/boxer mix. She is a very smart girl who knows many commands. Eva can be a little timid in new situations so she needs a family that is willing to take it slow with her. However, once she is comfortable she will show you all of the energy she has! We see lots of walk and training classes in her future to keep her mind stimulated. So far she has been great with cats and dogs she has met here at the shelter; we feel she would be okay in a home with either.

Spinal Manipulations and Consultations for your pet

Dr. Deanna Witte of Witte's Natural Veterinary Care will be visiting our Mukwonago store on Wednesday, March 15th for consultations, cold laser therapy and/or spinal manipulations for your pet. Consultations include discussion of holistic options regarding nutrition, supplements and essential oils.  Appointments are for 20 minutes and include both consultation and adjustment. Call 262-736-1212 to schedule an appointment at our Mukwonago store.

In addition to coming to our Mukwonago store, Dr. Witte also offers nutritional consults via telephone during normal business hours at her clinic.  Call her at 262-736-1212 to schedule. Please be sure she has your pet's records to review beforehand.  Nutritional phone consultations are $45 to start; additional charges may be necessary for extended appointments.

Lakeland Adoptables at Mukwonago EOTL

Stop by the Mukwonago EOTL Saturday, March 18th between 11am-2pm to meet adoptables from Lakeland Animal Shelter!

Did you know that Lakeland Animal Shelter cares for over 2,500 animals every year in the SE Wisconsin area?  At any given time, they house 40-60 dogs and 150-400 cats, and do not limit their intake based on the ages, temperament or health of the animals. Torque is approximately a year and a half old and came to HAWS as a stray. He is a bit shy, but once you allow him time and space to warm up to you he will gently sit on your lap. After some lap time he may be comfortable enough to play ball with you. Roll it to him and he will bat it back your way! He would love to find his forever home today!

Bessie is a 3-year-old Bassett hound/lab mix. She came up from Alabama and had 7 puppies here. She wouldn’t mind a home with a cat, but she does not get along with all dogs.  We don’t know what her previous history is and she can tend to be afraid of new people and handling; because of this we would not recommend her for homes with young children.  She is a sweet loving, silly lady looking for love now that her puppies have been adopted.

Lamont is a very cute Dutch rabbit. He is a bit overweight and is on a weight loss program with a healthy diet and lots of exercise! That means he will need to have lots of room to run and get in his daily amounts of steps!

Kali and Peppermint are a sweet and pretty bonded pair of guinea pigs. They love to hang out together and share green leafy salads. Exploring and zooming about their cage is one of their favorite things. Also they like to snuggle in a comfy human lap enjoying loving pets.
