November Fun Day--THIS Saturday the 4th

Come and see us on Saturday, November 4th! The Alaskan Malamute Club of Wisconsin will be having their all-breed weight pull outside our Mukwonago store! Registration and weigh-ins start at 9:30 am, with pulls starting at 11:00. The event is expected to conclude around 3:00 p.m.

Come to admire these hard pulling canines or sign your dog up to show how strong they are! Open to dogs at least one year of age, and weighing at least 30 lbs. Some pull harnesses will be available from the Club for dogs who want to participate but don't have one. There will also be people on hand to talk to owners whose dogs have never pulled.

Blanco and Isabelle are young ferrets. They love to snuggle and play. Any home that wants a little more spunk should look into this pair!

Mona is approximately 2 years old. Her striking look is only matched by her great personality! Mona came in as a stray so we do not know much about her history.

Sylvia is a 12 year old cat that was abandoned in a carrier on HAWS's parking lot. There was no information for her provided.  She is doing well here. She can be slow to warm up, but would make a great cat-dition to any home!

Roundy was found as a stray near a Roundys. She is a pretty active cat that likes to stare out of windows. We estimate her age at about a year of age. She is waiting for someone to take her into her furever home!

Positively Pewaukee Dog Costume Contest

Join us in downtown Pewaukee this Saturday, October 21st, for Positively Pewaukee's Halloween Fun Fest from noon-1:30pm. 

There will be downtown merchant trick-or-treating, sidewalk vendors and fun for the WHOLE family, including your furry family members! 

Right at noon in front of the Pewaukee End of the Leash there will be a DOG COSTUME CONTEST.  Dress up your canine friend and bring the whole family!

While you are in Pewaukee on the 21st, plan on coming to our Stone Pony Pottery Lasting Impressions event!  Please call us at 262-696-6052 to reserve your appointment, which are available between 10am-2pm.

Stone Pony Pottery will make a custom impression of your dog's pawprint!  They are $25 each (cash preferred, credit accepted). Your keepsake will be fired & professionally finished with iron oxide and a ribbon to create a beautiful & durable piece that you’ll cherish forever.

Riley came to HAWS as a stray after being found in pretty rough shape. He seems to be doing well at HAWS and is getting pampered until he finds his new home. He would enjoy a home where he can spend a lot of time hopping around on the floor.

Puffy the cat is 6 years old. Puffy originally came in as a stray soshe has a mysterious past. She is a cat that likes to lounge as well as play, and would make a great addition to any home.

Kitty Kat is 7 years old. He was brought in because his owners were moving and couldn't take him with. He is a spunky cat with a lot of personality! Any household would be lucky to have his company (or so he would have you think).

Forrest is a 6-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer. He did okay with dogs after getting used to them, but is too intense with cats. He can be a little anxious so he will need a home that can offer consistency. He can be fairly independent.

Phoebe is an 8-year-old dog from Florida. HAWS is recommending children 6 and older due to her age and sensitivities to muzzle touch. She is very sweet and settles down nicely after play with toys. If you are looking for an active dog that can be a couch potato, too, come and meet her!

Denny is a 2-year-old dog that came from Florida. He may do best with children 13 years and older due his high energy, and he can also become mouthy when he's too excited. He is very sweet and affectionate. He will offer you "Pittie" smiles on your bad days--and on the good ones too!

Jinx is a 3 year old cat that would love a family to warm up to. In his previous home he did okay with dogs that weren't too pushy with him. He can be a little scared, but once you earn his trust you have a life long friend. 

Cali is about 1.5 years old. She is a good looking cat and she knows it! She likes to lounge around and look at birds. Cali will also enjoy the company of a family that loves to play with her.

End of the Leash is partnering with Winston's Wishes here in WI and Lola's Lucky Day in Houston, TX (via Lakeland Animal Shelter) to provide supplies and food needed for areas affected by Hurricane Harvey.  

Currently EOTL Mukwonago AND Pewaukee are two of the drop-off sites for the donations. See below for how you can help!

• Please read this post on the Winston's Wishes Facebook page to see their list of needs! Donations should be to either EOTL location before Thursday, September 7th.
• Drop off your donations for Lola's Lucky Day at either EOTL location.  Check out Lola's Lucky Day's Facebook page for tons of other ways to help (they are in Houston). You can also donate money via PayPal.

Layla, Savy, and Cuddles are a trio of bonded guinea pigs so they must be adopted together! They are a fun group who love to explore together as a guinea pig caravan during their time out of cage time! They will require a very large habitat in which to live so they each have enough space to hang out.

Gotti is a 7 years old Pitbull Terrier. She has the cutest smile that will make your day no matter what. We are recommending children 10 and older due to her strength and her love of food. She may do best as the only pet. She loves playing with squeaky toys, and leaning into you for petting.

Snuggles is a 5 year old Chihuahua mix. She would do best in a home with teens and older. We are working on boosting her confidence. She is slow to warm up but once she does you'll have a pal for years! 

Mina is a 10 month old Labrador Mix. She can be sensitive to her muzzle being handled and she loves her chews. Mina did fine with a cat, but is more selective with dogs. If you can promise a lot of petting and toys, she'd be happy to accept you!

Holiday Weekend Hours

Both of our EOTL locations will be CLOSED for the Labor Day holiday on Monday, September 4th.  We will have normal hours on Saturday and Sunday!

We will reopen with normal hours at 9am on Tuesday, September 5th.

Fiona and Shrek are a mother and son bonded pair of chinchillas. They are quite active and need a very tall cage for hopping around. They would also enjoy a safe space out of their cage to scamper about and do some wall surfing! As a nocturnal species, they will be most active at night. 

Coco and Walnut are a very sweet and gentle bonded pair of Dutch bunnies. They love to snuggle with each other, eat their green leafy salads together and hang out with their human admirers. They are a joy to have around and will make you smile every day.

Raw Nutrition--Gotta Get Some

Here at EOTL we believe feeding a species-appropriate diet is one of the best things you can do for your pet!  

One aspect of that is providing FRESH protein.  Protein that has not been chemically processed or exposed to high heat has nearly all its enzymes and nutrients intact, providing high quality, bioavailable nutrition.  These proteins also include ground-up bone, which also assist in digestion, provide more nutrients, and even contribute to better dental health!

Micki is a 10 year old girl that will do best with an adult only or older children home. She is sweet, but can be timid. She is waiting for her forever home to stare out the windows and keep her family company!

Phinneas is a 4 year old Anatolian Shepherd. He seeks human interaction once he warms up to you. He loves food and calm petting. He may do best with teens and older because he can be very timid when in new environments or meeting new people. He may do best being the only dog since he's so big he'll need all your attention.

Helga is an adult cat who loves to lounge around! She came to HAWS as a stray after an adventure outdoors. No one came to reclaim her; she is now up for adoption.  

Starlyn is a 3 year old Pit Bull Terrier who is very strong and also very social. She may do best in a home being the only pet as she demands a lot of attention. The staff has described her as sweet, happy, and playful!

Millee is a 10 month old Hound mix. She can be shy initially and may do better with older children. She has gotten along with dogs at the shelter. She is quite social and playful, but also a little timid. This means she doesn't like all forms of handling, but would love a family that would play with her!

Fritzi is a 7 year old Australian Cattle dog mix. She can be sensitive to people checking her gums, but who isn't? She would do best being the only pet as other dogs stress her out. She is working on losing weight, so someone looking for a partner to go on calm, paced walks would be a perfect fit!

Is the Asphalt Too Hot-Hot-Hot for a Walk?

It's summer. Buddy needs exercise and it's hot out.  No problem--take some water for both of us and slip on a tank top, shorts and running shoes.  Something we may forget to consider, though, is what about Buddy's feet? It's easy for us to forget how HOT the pavement gets, even on a temperate, sunny day.

Cool treats for HOT days!

It's super easy to whip up a few stuffed frozen treats for Fido during the hot dog days of summer! There are tons of ideas out there, and here are a few we love:

First, you need something to stuff! A Kong or a hollowed-out center bone works great.

Then stuff it with one or more of the following:

• canned pumpkin
• raw or canned dog food
• unsweetened applesauce
• plain yogurt
• mashed banana mixed with a touch of peanut butter
• or your pet's favorite mushy treat!

For an even easier treat, try a frozen OC Raw bone or some Bear and the Rat Ice Cream--both available at either of our End of the Leash locations  :)

Mickey is an 8 years old domestic shorthair with Siamese markings. He came to HAWS because his owner was going away to college. Mickey likes spending time looking out the window and lounging around the house. If you want a cat, he would be handsome company. Some might say he is purrrfect!

Mack and Tank are approximately 2 years old. Both of these fellas are very sweet! They are waiting for that special someone that will turn their Pinterest into a "Pigterest". ;)

The lovable Buford is a 1.5 year old Pit Bull Terrier. He would enjoy being the only pet to hog your family's love! He is a high energy adolescent and may do best with older children due to this. In his free time he likes to play and get attention.

Timmy is a 3 year old Hotot rabbit. He came to HAWS because his owner joined the military and could not take him along. Timmy is sweet, friendly, and a fun fellow! He is full of energy and needs space to do many 500's and binkies every day!

Myrna is a 6 month old Pointer and Terrier mix puppy. She really enjoys the company of people--including children. Myrna would do best being the only pet in the home as she is a little shy.

Dexter is a Labrador mix puppy! He can be a timid boy, but wants to be outgoing. He seeks attention when he is comfortable, but when he is not he will retreat.  Dexter is not a big fan of restraint including from a leash, but HAWS is working on that.  

Rocco is a young Pit Bull Terrier mix. He would do better in a house with older children due to his level of energy, and he may do best in an only pet household. Rocco is very friendly--he just might put his front paws on your lap and lean into you!

Holiday Hours

At one time or another, our sweet animal friends may experience a bout of dry, flaky skin--or worse, have chronically itchy skin.  Dr. Karen Becker of healthypets.mercola.com wrote an informative article listing some of the main reasons this might be happening to your pet and some tips on how to resolve the issue.

The four most like reasons for dry skin in your pet are:

1. Lack of grooming
2. Too few or too many baths
3. A nutritional deficiency
4. An underlying medical condition

One of the beautiful things about coconut oil is its versatility.

Generally speaking though, I’ve yet to meet a dog that doesn’t love to lick hands clean after a slathering of coconut oil!

What Are The Benefits Of Coconut Oil For Dogs?

As far as your beloved pooch goes, coconut oil may help maintain clean teeth, shiny fur, and overall good health. It’s not a magic bullet, but it certainly can add to their overall well-being.

Coconut oil is safe to use both orally and topically and is an easy way to help build your dog’s immune system.

#1 — Lauric Acid

Coconut oil is the richest whole food source of lauric acid — a medium-chain triglyceride known for its therapeutic benefits.

Many of coconut oil’s health benefits can be attributed to its high content of lauric acid, which is known for possessing antibacterial, antiviral, and antimicrobial qualities.

#2 — Cleaner Teeth

Coconut oil has amazing antibacterial qualities which make it a great addition to your dog’s teeth cleaning regime.

After all, no one likes smelly dog breath!

If you’re not feeding your dog raw bones or specially made dog chews to help keep their teeth clean, it’s not uncommon for harmful bacteria to build up around their teeth and gums which contributes to smelly breath and oral health problems.

Simply add coconut oil to your dog’s food! Most dogs, however, will happily lick coconut oil straight off the spoon!

Start your fur baby off with just a lick and slowly increase the dosage to one teaspoon after 3 or 4 weeks. As with most things, too much too soon can upset your dog’s digestive system, and this slow increase gives their body time to adjust.

#4 — A Shiny Coat

During your dog’s next bath, mix 1 teaspoon of coconut oil in to the dog shampoo.

The coconut oil will leave your dog’s coat smooth and shiny. Who doesn’t love to bury themselves in a warm embrace when your dog has a nice clean coat? The added scent of coconut oil is a bonus!

#5 — Moisturizing Dry Skin

Coconut oil has become a popular skin and hair moisturizing treatment for humans, and your pooch can benefit just the same.

It’s simple, cost-effective, and does the job. If your dog is experiencing patches of dry skin, rub some coconut oil into the affected area. Do be careful not to use it in an area where they can easily lick it off — otherwise it may result in further irritation of the area.
